TOUR DESCRIPTION

The forest awakens long before the first rays of sun touch the valley floor. Your expedition begins at 5:30 AM with a private transfer from your hotel for a brief 15-to-30-minute drive into the mountains of Sabaneta. There, where the Andean cloud forest meets the morning mist, we will begin a leisurely, contemplative 3 km (1.8-mile) hike, ascending from 1,780 to 2,100 meters (5,840 to 6,890 feet) above sea level. This is far more than a checklist birding tour; it is a private masterclass in nature, designed for those who wish to deeply connect with the untamed language of the Earth.

THE REFINED ITINERARY

  • 06:00 – 06:45 AM | 1. The Awakening of the Forest: Welcome & Introduction

    • The Experience: We arrive at the sanctuary’s threshold just as avian activity reaches its absolute peak. In the magical twilight of dawn, the forest greets us with an intricate symphony of overlapping songs. Here, we will sharpen our senses to decode the behavior of the forest’s early risers: the striking Andean Motmot, the mystical Andean Solitaire, and the boisterous Colombian Chachalaca. You will learn the subtle yet crucial difference between a bird’s song (courtship and territory) and its call (alarm and cohesion), unlocking a deeper layer of birding that few ever get to experience.

    • The Guide's Narrative: “Good morning, and welcome to La Romera Ecological Park, a natural sanctuary guarded by the mountains of Sabaneta. Today, we embark on a journey that goes beyond mere observation: we will learn to listen, to read the forest, and to decipher the secret language of birds. This ecosystem is home to over 300 species—a vital refuge for both residents and weary migratory travelers. I invite you to walk in silence, sharpen your senses, and connect with this living landscape. Let’s check our gear, adjust our optics... and let our flight begin.

  • 06:45 – 08:00 AM | Trail Segment I: “The Oropendola Route” and the Architects of the Air

    • The Experience: We explore the sector just before the park’s main gate, an open area perfectly suited to catch the pristine morning light. The sky comes alive as we focus on the fascinating Russet-backed Oropendolas (Psarocolius angustifrons) and their astonishing, gravity-defying hanging nests. Guided by interpretive listening supported by field recordings, we will dive into the evolutionary history of New World icterids, accompanied by the subtle darting of various flycatchers and the elegance of the Sickle-winged Guan (Chamaepetes goudotii).

  • 08:00 – 09:30 AM | Trail Segment II: In Search of the Golden-winged Manakin

    • The Experience: We step under the dense canopy just ahead of the park checkpoint. Here, the atmosphere becomes intimate, dappled light filters through the leaves, and the technical rewards increase. With patience and expert guidance, we will seek out the elusive Golden-winged Manakin (Chloropipo flavicapilla), a vulnerable and near-endemic gem highly prized by international birders. This segment serves as our living classroom to understand the secrets of tropical forest stratification—how different species claim specific vertical layers of the canopy for their survival.

  • 09:30 – 10:45 AM | Trail Segment III: “Travelers of the Clouds” – Identifying Migrants

    • The Experience: Crossing into the official reserve, we cross paths with the forest's "international guests." This sector is a renowned hotspot for wood-warblers (parulids) that travel thousands of miles from North America. We will learn to spot the fiery throat of the Blackburnian Warbler (Setophaga fusca) or the delicate patterns of the Black-and-white Warbler (Mniotilta varia), marveling at the monumental migratory journeys and the ecological threads that connect our continents.

  • 10:45 – 11:15 AM | Field Break: Local Flavors & Logbook Review

    • The Experience: A well-deserved pause in an exclusive natural setting to enjoy a premium snack and hydration. We will use this time to review our field notes, consolidating our list of identified species so far, and sharing the morning’s best anecdotes and photographs.

  • 11:15 – 12:30 PM | Trail Segment IV: Winged Jewels – New World Tanagers

    • The Experience: As the day warms up, the forest bursts into technicolor. We dedicate this hour and a half to exploring the most biodiverse section for the Thraupidae family. Tanagers represent the ultimate expression of color in the Neotropics. We will actively search for the striking Scrub Tanager (Stilpnia vitriolina), the vivid contrast of the Summer Tanager (Piranga rubra), and the brilliant blues of the Bay-headed Tanager (Tangara girola) and Blue-necked Tanager (Stilpnia cyanicollis). An absolute immersion into South America’s visual wealth.

  • 12:30 – 1:00 PM | Trail Segment V & Closing: “Where the Mighty Soar”

    • The Experience: We crown our expedition at the highest point of La Romera, near the ranger station. At this hour, warm thermal currents begin to rise, offering a prime opportunity to witness majestic raptors riding the wind against a breathtaking panoramic backdrop of the Aburrá Valley. Here, we will digitize our journey, learning to log our sightings into global citizen science platforms like eBird and Merlin, directly contributing to worldwide conservation data.

    • Final Reflection: “Thank you for being part of this scientific and sensory expedition. I invite you to keep your eyes turned to the sky and to carry the spirit of conservation with you. La Romera is a fragile treasure, and every conscious traveler who walks beneath its trees becomes a guardian of its legacy.”

    • We conclude the day with the delivery of your finalized digital species list and a group photograph before boarding our private transport back to your hotel (estimated arrival: 1:30 PM).

Whether you're a dedicated ornithologist or simply someone who appreciates the wonders of nature, this experience in Medellín promises to leave you with lasting memories and a deeper appreciation for

Colombia is the top country in the world for the observation of birds, due to its immense variety of birds and ecosystems. As far as birds are concerned, Venezuela is normally divided into two main areas - north and south of the Orinoco River, since this river plays an important role in the regional evolution of the birds.

In Pitangus, however, we have decided to take this a step further and divide the north area into two areas. Thus easing the elaboration of products and maximizing the enjoyment of each trip.

All of Pitangus’ birding trips are fun, reliable, professional, safe and above all environmentally friendly.
